The rapper posted the meme in question on his Facebook page and it read ‘His momma named him Bruce, Imma call him Bruce’.0
While the meme doesn’t state that it is referring to Bruce Jenner, who unveiled himself as Caitlyn Jenner for the first time on the front cover of Vanity Fair magazine this week, the timing is coincidental if not telling.
The meme shows a scene from 1988 film Coming To America in which people refused to call Cassius Clay by his new name Muhammad Ali.
Naturally it attracted a great deal of comments with many lashing out at Timbaland and accusing him of transphobia, with some pointing out that he was born ‘Timothy’, not, surprisingly, Timbaland.
While he did have some supporters, he struck out on Twitter after seeing the backlash, insisting he wasn’t the one who created the mem, he merely re-posted it, and who’s to say it’s about Bruce Jenner anyway?
Hmmmmm.
