It was the former governor of Ekiti
State, Segun Oni, who made the first attack. Oni said that the Peoples
Democratic Party’s victory in the state does not still prove Governor
Ayodele Fayose’s popularity.
You can see why such a statement
will provoke Fayose. His entire political narrative is built around his
‘man of the people’ person – to take that away from him is to take the
essence of his politics.
So the governor did not waste time in
responding. He lambasted Oni for daring to talk about popularity, a
concept which, according to the governor, Oni would not fully understand
since he has never won an election.
Oni’s tenure as governor was
cut short when the tribunal ruled that he was not the real winner of
the poll that brought him to power and awarded the mandate to Kayode
Fayemi who served for a term before he was defeated by Fayose.
Fayose
said that Oni could not appreciate the popularity of other politicians
or value it because he had never been a popular politicia.
Speaking
through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, Fayose accused
Oni of always relying on godfathers to impose him on the people due to
his unpopularity.
“Since it takes the deep to call to the deep,
only a successful politician will be able to appreciate what it takes to
win in an election,” he said.
Adelusi said that the governor
deserved kudos due to the fact that he left office for eight years, came
back and still defeated the All Progressives Congress governor in all
the 16 local governments of the state. He also pointed out that he
trounced the party in the last general elections in the state.
According to Adelusi, Oni came third in the 2006 PDP governorship primary, but the godfathers imposed him on the party.
“Segun
Oni did not win the 2007 governorship election which informed the
nullification of his election by the court,” Adelusi said while
reminding the former governor that the court also removed him because he
was imposed on the PDP as the party’s National Vice-Chairman
(South-West).
Adelusi said, “How do you compare Segun Oni, who
was always removed from office by the court due to unpopularity with
Fayose, who has always won elections and whose elections have always
been affirmed by the court?”
