Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann after he was reportedly persuaded to make the move by the Portuguese ‘super-agent’ Jorge Mendes.
Griezmann has emerged as a serious target for Jose Mourinho in recent months, with Chelsea looking to bolster their attacking options as Didier Drogba enters the final stretch of his career.
Mendes – who boasts Mourinho and Diego Costa among his clients – is believed to have been enlisted to get a deal over the line, and according to Onda Cero he has already convinced the 24-year-old to join Chelsea this summer.
Although the deal still depends on Chelsea agreeing a fee with Atletico, the two sides enjoy a strong relationship, and Mendes’ involvement could now be decisive.
Griezmann is believed to have a release clause of around £43million, and while Atletico are likely to demand the full amount to part with a forward who has hit 22 league goals this season, Chelsea could negotiate by using Filipe Luis as a potential makeweight.
